About Gordon Solee

(1925-1999)
Gordon Solee joined Otter Tail Power right out of high school, as an apprentice lineman. After a few years of field experience, he took a leave of absence to earn a degree in electrical engineering, then returned to work as a line crew leader, and on to successive positions in Engineering. He spent his entire career at one company: Otter Tail Power, in Minnesota.
Along the way, Mr. Solee discovered a love for teaching, and in particular for training linemen. He had a unique ability to simplify complex concepts, so even those with little or no electrical knowledge learned quickly.
His training courses at Otter Tail grew so popular, he took them on the road. Throughout his career he trained thousands of linemen, mainly in the Midwest.
Mr. Solee liked to tinker in his home workshop, making models of distribution transformers and miniature substations. These realistic training aids became hallmarks of his training programs.
We are grateful for permission by Elaine Solee to deliver her husband’s material. Thanks also to Greg Moore of Nevada Power for supplying the slides and original recordings.
