Summary

This 55-minute DVD explains the principles involved in working on energized lines using hot sticks. The principles are illustrated by a demonstration of replacement of dead-end crossarms with the lines energized. (For comparison, DLG-DVD shows the same task performed using gloves.) Method, communication, concentration, and safety are emphasized throughout the video. How to prepare for a job that will be done using hot sticks, perform the work safely, and return the job site to a normal condition.

  • Hot-Line Tools – 8 minutes Identifies various types of hot-line tools and describe the functions of each tool. Describes the proper way to care for hot-line tools.

  • Planning and Safety – 8 minutes Explains the purpose of a tailgate session. Describes site inspection checks commonly made before hot-stick work is started on a distribution line. Describes common safety practices to observe when using hot-line tools.

  • Removing and Installing Tie Wires – 11 minutes Identifies the hot-line tools used to remove and install tie wires and describes the function of each tool. Describes a basic procedure for removing and installing tie wires.

  • Moving a Single-Phase Line – 9 minutes Identifies hot-line tools used to move a line by the lift method, and describes the function of each tool. Describes a procedure for moving a single-phase line using the lift method. Identifies hot-line tools used to move a line by the side method and describes the function of each tool. Describes a procedure for moving a single-phase line using the side method.

  • Moving Three-Phase Lines – 10 minutes Describes a basic procedure for moving three-phase lines using an auxiliary side arm. Describes a procedure for moving three-phase lines using an auxiliary mast arm.

  • Changing Out a Dead-End Insulator – 7 minutes Identifies the hot-line tools used to change out a dead-end insulator, and describes the function of each tool. Describes a procedure for changing out a dead-end insulator.
