Summary

This 46-minute DVD introduces line test equipment used in the field to detect voltage, current, and resistance. Shows how this equipment is used, and typical readings that can be expected. Explains how to determine which instrument to use, and demonstrates how to use each meter to take a reading.

Training Sessions

  • Introduction to Test Equipment – 6 minutes Lists four commonly used types of line test equipment. Explains how to determine the correct testing device to use for a particular application. Describes how to obtain an accurate reading from a line test device.

  • Ammeters – 9 minutes Explains how to use a clamp-on ammeter. How to use a recording demand ammeter with a maxitran. Describes the function of a maximeter.

  • Voltmeters and Voltage Testers - 8 minutes Describes the basic operation of a voltage test device. Describes how a noisy tester is used. Explains the differences between a needle-indicating voltmeter and a digital-indicating voltmeter. Describes in general terms how to use a phasing tool. Describes in general terms how to use a recording voltmeter.

  • Application of Voltmeters – 9 minutes Describes how a voltage test device, a voltmeter, and a recording voltmeter are used together to check a low-voltage complaint at a house. Explains how a phasing tool is used to match two sets of three-phase primary conductors at one utility pole.

  • Rotation Indicators – 6 minutes Explains in general terms how three-phase AC power is generated. Describes how a rotation indicator is used to indicate the direction of three-phase AC power.

  • Ground Resistance Test Devices – 7 minutes Lists the parts of a typical ground resistance test device. Describes how a typical ground resistance test device is used to test the resistance value of a ground.
