Summary

This 54-minute DVD explains the principles of underground cable splicing and demonstrates how cable splices are made. It explains how to approach splicing in both primary and secondary cable. Demonstrations of splicing both types of cable are presented. Also describes how heat-shrink and cold-shrink splices are used.

Training Sessions

  • Electrical Cable – 7 minutes Identifies the major parts of a primary cable.
  • Voltage Stress and Stress Relief – 6 minutes Explains what voltage stress is. Explains how a layered cable design helps counteract the effects of voltage stress. Explains how a layered cable design helps provide for the relief of static charges.
  • Cable Preparation – 9 minutes Describes one method of preparing primary cable for a tape splice. Identifies equipment that can be used to prepare primary cable for a tape splice.
  • Primary Cable Splicing – 9 minutes Explains how mechanical presses and hydraulic presses are used to install compression connectors to join conductor ends. Describes one method of completing a tape splice on single-conductor, jacketed primary cable.
  • Splice Kits – 10 minutes Describes and demonstrates how to install a molded slip-on splice on a primary cable with a concentric neutral. Describes and demonstrates how to install a heat-shrink splice on a primary cable with a jacketed concentric wire layer.
  • Secondary Cable Splicing – 10 minutes Identifies differences between primary and secondary cable construction. Describes and demonstrates how to perform a split bolt (mechanical) splice, a heat-shrink splice, a cold-shrink splice, and a rolling ring seal splice on a secondary cable.
